| The next time you step into the City's Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain, opposite Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, be prepared to be bowled over by not just the sight of dancing fountains but also for a power-packed performance from solar and non conventional energy tapping units. Energy Park, the first of its kind in Bangalore, replete with a solar hut with a photovoltaic rooftop system, a children's pool with a solar water heater test facility, battery-operated vehicles that will take you around the park and a windmill that pumps bore well water among others is all set to take off in the next few weeks. The park will be thrown open to the public after a formal inaugural ceremony. A demonstration of street lighting and garden lights with a small solar panel has been highlighted. Aero generators (miniature version of windmills) have been put up at various places in the park to create energy through wind. The 1.5 crore project has been undertaken by Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL), in association with the Horticultural Department. The venture has also been financially supported by the Ministries of Non-conventional Energy Sources (MNES).

| According to KREDL Managing Director, Dr. B. Shivalingaiah, the park aims to disseminate information to the public about the various non-conventional forms of energy and in turn popularize it. “Through this venture, we want to let the public know that one can offset the impending energy crisis by utilizing non-conventional forms of energy”, he said, adding that nearly 70 KVA of power will be generated each day through solar, wind and bio-mass units. As for the solar hut that has been made of bamboo, he said the photovoltaic roof system would demonstrate how a normal house with electrical gadgets like fridge, TV and computer games could function with the solar power generated. Efforts have also been made to educate children about renewable sources of energy. The slides, drums and see-saws in the park have a panel that indicates that energy can be created through friction alone. |

| To support the creation of a network of retail outlets in all the districts for sale and service of solar energy and
other renewable energy products, MNRE has announced the scheme of “Akshay Urja Shops” during the year 2005-
2006. Under the Scheme MNRE has sanctioned 22 Akshay Urja Shops to the State of Karnataka. 7 shops are already set up and others are in the process of set up. Thus the network of the shops is expected to be expanded by encouraging private entrepreneurs and NGOs to set up and operate such shops in all the districts. The Programme will provide for higher support to the shops in terms of soft loans through Banks and monthly recurring grant and incentive for first two years of operation. KREDL - a nodal agency of the Government of Karnataka, responsible entirely for the development of non-conventional energy sources in the state. The main aim of the organisation is to promote projects which produce electricity by utilizing non-conventional energy viz., Solar Energy, Small Hydro, Bio-Mass, Wind Power and other sources. KREDL also is responsible to take up imaginative campaign and publicity programmes through leaflets, paper advertisements, and websites to bring awareness among the people to popularise renewables and use of energy efficient devices for conservation of energy. KREDL through the Aditya Solar Shop creates awareness to the public in exhibiting several solar equipments like Solar Water Heating Systems, Solar PV Lanterns, Home Lights, Street Lights, Solar Parabolic Cooker, and Solar Powered Bicycle, etc.. |

The Mobile Exhibition van is being used for aggressive propagation of solar devices in the State. The mobile van is being sent to the all parts of Karnataka for demonstrating the usage of solar devices and thus creating awareness about solar devices among the common public. Additional 2 mobile exhibition vans have been procured for organizing exhibitions / public campaigns on renewable energy in remote and far flung areas of the State. Do you know? A domestic Solar Water Heater of capacity 100 litres per day can prevent emission of 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year and save 200 kwh of electricity annually. |
