While designing children's rooms, colours play a very important role. They make the room look vibrant and can reflect the child's colourful personality. It has been observed by experts that children relate more to visual forms and colours. Murals also play a very important aspect in the overall designing of a children's area. Include your child in design discussions but remember, being children, they are not going to be concerned about the cost implications. Talk about the theme of the mural or the colour schemes and you will find that they are very vocal about their choices. It is very important to take into consideration, proportions, colour scheme and the source of light in the room. The overall effect should ultimately enhance the room, not take away from it. It is very important to decide the theme of the mural, as it will remain in your child's room for at least five years. The child should not outgrow the theme too quickly. Drawbacks in the room can be turned into assets. For example, a beam can be used as a prop for a toy to hang from. A column can be made to look like a tree trunk, for animals to peek out from. If colouring an entire wall sounds too daunting, a big canvas can be painted and put up on the wall. This can be removed or changed. Soft boards also present an interesting option as they are cheap and can be changed or worked on. The shapes and colours infused into the room via soft boards or even scribblers can inspire and encourage a child's creativity. |

The use of colours in a child's bedroom and play or study area is strongly recommended. Colours are known for their healing qualities and can be used to stimulate and motivate children. The colour scheme in a child's area can lend energy to help them keep up with the hectic pace. What with academic and social demands causing high stress levels among teens and pre-teens, a well done room can really help to de-stress them. Starry ceilings are a novel concept, which can be created using glow paints. It is possible to create a sky-like effect on the ceiling. It is nearly invisible during the day but glows like stars in the dark. Even major constellations can be accurately mapped out on the ceiling. Learning constellations was never as much fun or as easy. While designing the furniture, remember sharp corners are a no-no. Floor space is important, and always try and leave some floor space where the children can play. A raised platform in wood can also act as a play area with the space underneath doubling up as storage for toys. A bunk bed with the study unit underneath also presents interesting options. A personal space to call his own is a must for every child as it gives him a sense of belonging and a place to come back to. It gives the child a sense of security and is a luxury every child deserves. |
